Glowplugs

Hi all,

 

Now as the weather has become colder I have noticed my 2005 1.9 TDI (130) PD is not as keen as it used to be on starting on these cold mornings, engine turns over no probs and quickly so the battery is fine. I strongly suspect the continual stop start routine has taken its toll on the glowplugs.

 

I am going to check their resistances this weekend but not sure of 2 things

 

1. Where are they and what do I need to remove to get at them? any photos

2. How are they removed form the engine? can you snap them off if you aren't careful.

 

Perfectly at home with meters and electrics.

 

Oh and I noticed by its absence that the aux heater appears to be dead! (temp 2 degrees) Done this fix once before and changed its glow plug. Cant remember if a reset by Vag required once its given up the ghost (ie Try to start 3 times, no start call it a day)

Hi there

I would be really surprised if the glow plugs were causing your starting problems, but check them anyway.

If you lift off the plastic cover over the engine you will see the four plugs located in the cylinder head facing you, the power supply leads just pull off, you will need a deep socket to fit the plugs, if they are very tight warm engine up for ten minutes.

 

May be an idea to see if any fault codes stored this may also help with booster heater as it may be locked out for whatever reason ie, overheated, flame failure

IIRC On the PD engines the glow plugs are under the rocker cover :lol:

 

Sounds as if indeed one or more glow plugs are shot - they should measure at < 1 ohm each (once you pull off the tight fitting busbar). Usually they fail open circuit or in the kohm range.

 

On the Mk1 Tdi they come out easy with a deepish socket set, should be the same on the PD.
